Most of my personal assigned shoots are like this one, where it’s usually just the model and me. There are pros and cons, but let’s focus on the pros! Small teams make you faster and more agile in the wild, the same thing with strike mission photo shoots. These usually involve camping on location or near it the night before, waking up super early for first light, to avoid crowds and take advantage of the nice soft light. Sunrise shoots are very fast…like 30 minutes max is what I try to shoot in. This means it’s all about the pre-production. Planning out outfits, location, time, poses, and story development.
I enjoy creating a story that gives me feelings of nostalgia. I’ve always been drawn to vintage nostalgia, so with this shoot, I wanted to visit an old swimming pool near where I grew up. I wanted the wardrobe to be inspired by vintage swimwear and I kinda went with that.
Julianna, a close friend who models was perfect for this shoot; Julianna is always down to create images even if it means hiking miles to jump into a freezing pool at sunrise.
My biggest tip for anyone shooting on location is to study the spot, where the sun rises, sets, how heavy traffic it is, and then plan the logistics around it. Have fun and get out there and create with your friends!

I’ve been trying to stay inspired and keep focused on mastering my craft. I strongly believe in doing as many passion projects/self assignments as possible. I try to do one self-assigned shoot/project a week.
This series was a trip up into the mountains in our trucks to explore and attempt to photograph our findings. This was shot with a Mamiya RZ67 Pro II with 110mm f/2.8 on Portra 800 pulled a stop.
3 days up the coast with Mary Joe and friends.
This trip started out packing last minute as usual. Try to pack light, but enough to stay comfortable.
Ambition Mission : To try and do as many activities as possible in a short amount time.
This 3 day weekend(MLK Day 2019) we left Costa Mesa to snowboard, camp, dirt bike, and see Death Valley and whatever might interest along the way.

I love coffee...alot. Wherever I travel I always pack a camp stove and Kuju drop packets. Nothing like having fresh drip coffee where ever you may be. Thanks @kujucoffee

When I hear "Eastern Sierras" for some reason I always think of a cold Sierra Nevada(beer). I have never not had a bad time up here so maybe this is why I always come back. The 395 is one of my favorite roads in California! From wide open desert scapes of the Trona Pinnacles and Alabama Hills, and to the forest and lakes north of Mammoth.
